| Here we have a 1/25th scale 1964 Comet Caliente. This kit was originally issued by AMT as a Craftsman kit. The Craftsman kits were a junior kit that had the mirror and antenna holes pre drilled. The hood did not open. It was like a promo, most parts snapped together. AMT issued it in 1964 as Craftsman Series 3in1 kit#4324 It was again issued in 1967 and 1968 as Craftsman Series. Kit#4038 and Kit# C104. AMT released the final issue in 1969 as "Bandito" 3in1 Kit# T141 This kit remained highly sought after for many years. Then in 2005 AMT ERTL in conjunction with a new fledgling company "MODEL KING" teamed up to redo some of AMT's old issues, this was one of them. The tooling is exactly the same as I remember it from the original issues. I built this one for a customer to his requested specifications. It is painted in the factory color "pink frost" and has the white insert going down the middle of the car. This accent was used on the Caliente. Other models of this car were the Cyclone, the 202, and the 404. There was an optional woodgrain package offered on this car. I added it to this one. This included the dash, steering wheel, and front door panel. I used tan base paint, and feathered in a woodgrain brown for a nice simulation. The interior is foiled and detailed. The tooling had the mirror holes and antenna hole on the back fender. These were all filled in, as the mirror holes were on the outboard part of the front fenders, not the correct place. It also never had an antenna on the rear fender, rather it was on the front passengers side. At customers request I did not add an antenna. The exterior was foiled and detailed as the stock version of this car should be. I replaced the no name blackwall tires provided with the kit, with some vintage AMT Firestone Supreme whitewalls. Mercury had great success with the Comet, as an economy cars, as well as a highly noted performance car. |
